“Yes! London. You know…fish, chips, cup o’ tea. Bad food, worse weather, Mary fuckin’ Poppins LONDON!”
To rebut Cousin Avi from the 2000 British crime film Snatch, the food in London was actually pretty good, and we finally caught a break with some nice weather after weeks of rain and cold.
We arrived mid-afternoon on June 8th at Gatwick airport and made our way to our flat on Westbourne Grove in London (just east of Notting Hill). We actually had some good sleep and a decent meal before departing Dublin, so our first impression of the UK was on point.
London is such a great city…the people, the layout, the tube (which Savannah quickly learned and relieved me of navigational duties), the architecture, the pubs, the food. We did have to get used to everyone driving on the other side of the road, which can pose a bit of danger when crossing busy streets. However, the British are quick to help you get acquainted with honks and brash swerves.
The first evening was rather uneventful. We had Italian for dinner, and returned to the flat to begin planning the rest of the trip and catch up with our friends and family. Our Airbnb hosts, James and Sean, eventually arrived and helped us plan our journey. They could not have been more helpful. They saved us hours of research! We got a good nights rest and got ready for the days ahead.
The next couple days were filled with sightseeing. We took off on the route suggested by James and Sean, and it did not disappoint.
We spent our last days visiting Windsor Castle, where Josh met up with an old friend, and then we took a sort of gloomy trip over to Camden to visit Amy Winehouse’s flat.
We said our goodbyes to James and Sean and took off for Gatwick to catch our flight to Paris.
