We arrived in Krakow, Poland on July 31st. We found a nice, comfortable Airbnb just north of the city center hosted by a very sweet lady named Lucyna. The room was on the top floor of her home, where she also hosted a couple of other guests.
Krakow definitely brought a change in tone to our trip. It is a city with so much history that you see and feel all around you.
With all the beautiful sights, great food, and really nice people, you tend to forget the horrible atrocities that occurred here during World War II at the hands of nazi Germany. It was an incredibly moving and life-changing experience for us to visit the concentration and extermination camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. It was a stark reminder of the power of unbridled hate and racism. There is no place for it in civilized society.
We spent the last day in Krakow visiting a few other WWII historical sites: the Plaszow concentration camp grounds, the Oskar Schindler factory, and a section of wall from the Krakow ghetto. The Plaszow camp was deconstructed by the nazis towards the end of the war, so only an open field remained. The Oskar Schindler factory is now a WWII museum.
